Welcome!
Thanks for visiting the web portfolio of Karen Collins, M. ED,
Learning & Technology

Karen is an Independent Senior Instructional Designer/eLearning Consultant with over 15 years in the learning industry. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Computer Science from the University of Baltimore, and Western Governor's University with a Master's in Education, specializing in Learning and Technology.

She is an Adobe Captivate Certified eLearning Specialist with over ten years of designing and developing adult learning products. One of Karen's most successful learning designs includes the performance of action research to improve computer science student outcomes in writing, increasing student attendance at the academic writing center for computer science students by 1000 percent in one semester. By partnering with both the library and writing center services, inviting professional game writers to address the students regarding the importance of writing in gaming, and allocating extra credit points for consulting the academic writing center frequency of student attendance went from 1 visit in the previous academic year to over 30 in one semester. Student writing outcomes also improved throughout four writing assignments due to the implementation of the instructional strategies. After completing the research, many students implied they would continue to use the writing center as a resource for future writing assignments, which was the enduring measure of success.

Recently, Karen has collaborated on several government contracting projects and participated in training teams for the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Karen's mission is to create learning cultures that promote efficiency, efficacy, creativity, and profitability through science, empathy, and societal changes. She believes that people are learning organisms, eager to adapt to new environments. She also believes that when businesses value, embrace, cultivate, harness, and encourage lifelong learning as part of their culture, the return on investment is a workforce that generates personal and professional growth, happiness, endurance, productivity, and profitability.
You will find Karen doing anything creative outside of work, including singing, woodworking, painting, playing in Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator, sewing, picture taking, watching movies or reading, drinking coffee, and hanging with her beloved dogs Sprocket and Sneakers.
